Governance and Purpose

This document contains the project’s open problems, tests, and revision triggers. The article changes only when the geometry of the model changes. The References change whenever sources, caveats, dates, or interpretations improve. This Research Program changes whenever an open problem is resolved, reformulated, falsified, or assigned a better method.

The program is modular, but its current priority order is binding: identity → antecedence → authorship (§1.3–§1.5) → integration → parameter basis → celestial testing. A downstream success cannot compensate for an unresolved upstream dependency. Failure of the celestial/archetypal extension does not falsify antecedent agency; success would not prove premortal agency, providence, or Christian theology.

Scope. This program pursues a realist sourcehood reconstruction and deliberately brackets transcendental-idealist strategies that relocate freedom through a phenomenal/noumenal distinction. Their omission is methodological, not a claim that those strategies have been refuted.

§1. Metaphysics of the Antecedent Subject

§1.1 Personal identity across epistemic discontinuity

Question. What makes the antecedent author and embodied experiencer the same responsible subject if autobiographical memory does not bridge the two modes?

Why it matters. This is the core identity debt. If the chooser is not the sufferer in the morally relevant sense, relocation of freedom fails: another subject authored the constraints.

Current commitment. The strong model requires numerical or equivalently robust responsible-subject continuity. Memory alone is not the criterion. Soul-continuity is a candidate, not a solution by definition. (See: Personal identity; Soul-continuity)

Research tasks.

1. Compare substance, psychological, causal, bodily, narrative, and divine-identification accounts of personal identity.
2. Specify whether responsibility requires strict numerical identity or a weaker relation of authorship-preserving continuity.
3. Test whether divine individuation can supplement, but not replace, an identity criterion.
4. Compare premortalist arguments with Buddhist causal-continuity models as an adversarial control.

Success condition. A criterion that explains why antecedent authorship remains mine despite radical epistemic discontinuity without merely stipulating sameness.

Failure condition. Every plausible continuity relation is either too weak to ground authorship or incompatible with the ontology required by the strong model.

§1.2 Choose or refine the antecedence trilemma

Question. In what mode can creaturely sourcehood be antecedent to embodied history?

Options.

• Premortal created succession: strongest intuitive authorship; highest Christian-anthropological cost.
• Atemporal creaturely agency: strongest extra-temporality; highest metaphysical burden.
• Ontological antecedence: easiest classical-theist fit; greatest risk that authorship becomes divine selection of a possible person rather than creaturely act.

Research tasks.

1. Construct the strongest version of each horn rather than criticizing caricatures.
2. Identify whether premortal succession needs to precede physical spacetime or only embodiment.
3. Determine whether deliberation necessarily implies succession.
4. Examine whether an atemporal act can possess intentional structure without temporal process.
5. Determine whether ontological antecedence can preserve creaturely authorship through modal or counterfactual structure rather than an earlier episode.

Success condition. One horn can be defended without surrendering both creaturely authorship and metaphysical coherence.

Failure condition. Every horn either moves authorship back to God, makes creaturely agency incoherent, or requires a subject ontology the theory cannot defend.

§1.3 The authorship threshold

Question. How much must an antecedent subject know about a selected parameter for the selection to count as meaningful authorship rather than empty assent?

Current structure. known parameter → known admissible range → unknown concrete realization.

Research tasks.

1. Define informational thresholds for understanding an admissible range.
2. Distinguish selection, assent, permission, exposure, risk acceptance, and desire.
3. Build examples where too little information clearly fails to ground authorship.
4. Build examples where too much information clearly collapses into scene-selection.
5. Compare philosophical theories of informed consent without importing contract law wholesale into metaphysics.

Success condition. A principled middle criterion that makes antecedent choice morally significant while preserving open concrete realization.

Failure condition. Every threshold is either arbitrary, vacuous, or equivalent to choosing the later scene.

§1.4 Why ordinary compatibilism is insufficient for this project

Question. What extra kind of sourcehood is antecedent agency supposed to secure that ordinary compatibilist ownership of reasons, character, and action does not?

Why it matters. Compatibilism may explain how a determined action is still mine when it issues from my own reasons and dispositions rather than coercion. This project asks whether the creature can also contribute to the source from which those reasons and dispositions arise. Classical theism sharpens that question because the creature’s character belongs to a providentially actualized order, but the distal-source problem is not unique to theism.

Working distinction. Free execution is not yet the same claim as creaturely authorship of the executable.

Research tasks.

1. Compare reasons-responsiveness and other compatibilist ownership conditions with stronger sourcehood requirements.
2. Examine distal-source and manipulation objections without assuming in advance that they defeat compatibilism.
3. Specify exactly what antecedent agency adds that cannot be recovered by a sufficiently rich compatibilist account.
4. Determine whether the project’s sourcehood desideratum is necessary for moral responsibility, or only for the stronger authorship claim the model wants.

Success condition. A precise, non-question-begging account of the additional sourcehood purchased by antecedent agency.

Failure condition. If compatibilism already supplies every form of creaturely authorship the project actually requires, antecedent agency is metaphysically gratuitous.

§1.5 Origination regress / first-act problem

Question. If antecedent agency is supposed to provide sourcehood, what makes its first act genuinely originate with the agent rather than merely express a prior character—and what prevents an underdetermined act from collapsing into luck or arbitrariness?

Dilemma.

• Prior sufficient character: if an antecedent act is fixed by an earlier dispositional state, the sourcehood problem has merely moved backward.
• No sufficient prior determination: if the act is not fixed by such a state, the theory owes an account of control, reason-responsiveness, and authorship rather than brute happenstance.

Research tasks.

1. Distinguish reason-giving explanation from sufficient causal determination.
2. Compare agent-causal, event-causal, and noncausal libertarian accounts of origination and their respective luck objections.
3. Read Augustine, De libero arbitrio II–III and City of God XII.6–7, as models of explanatory termination at voluntary defection without generalizing the deficient-cause analysis to every free act.
4. Use Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics III.5, adversarially: acts can help form character, but the first character-forming act still needs an account.
5. Use Aquinas, Summa Theologiae I, q.63, a.5, only as a qualified witness: Aquinas denies that the devil sinned in the first instant, while his treatment of angelic agency still shows that created intellectual succession need not be ordinary bodily clock-time.
6. State criteria that would distinguish an originating act from a merely brute event.

Important boundary. “Origination is where explanation stops” is not yet an answer. The research problem is whether an act can be intelligible through reasons and attributable to the agent without being the inevitable output of a still earlier character.

Success condition. A defensible account of sourceful origination that neither launches a regress through prior character nor collapses into arbitrariness or luck.

Failure condition. Every candidate account either makes the first act the determined output of an earlier state, strips it of enough explanation or control to count as authorship, or leaves “origination” as a label for brute occurrence.

§2. Formal Theory of Limited Selection and Global Integration

§2.1 Satisfaction semantics for providential integration

Question. What would it mean for one world to satisfy many antecedent contributions?

Current vocabulary. hard, soft, relational, permission/risk-envelope, forbidden, and nomic constraints. (See: Constraint types; Providential integration)

Research tasks.

1. Define a domain for person-level parameters.
2. Define satisfaction for each constraint type.
3. Determine whether constraints may conflict and what priority relations are admissible.
4. Specify whether the integration problem is satisfiability, optimization, lexicographic ordering, partial ordering, or another structure.
5. Separate logical impossibility from moral inadmissibility and from physical/nomic impossibility.
6. Ask whether multiple worlds can equally satisfy the same antecedent contributions or whether a uniqueness principle is needed.

Important restraint. W = C(P1,...,Pn) remains dependency notation until these questions are answered. The project should not present named functions as if they were derived mathematical results.

Success condition. A coherent formal semantics with explicit domain and satisfaction rules that clarifies, rather than merely renames, the integration problem.

Failure condition. “Integration” cannot be made more precise than a theological placeholder without introducing arbitrary priorities.

§2.2 Discovering the parameter basis

Question. Is there a stable low-dimensional basis of recurrent existential structures capable of generating or classifying a wide range of biographies?

Required properties. generativity, non-redundancy, cross-context recurrence, abstraction, compression, and independent codability.

Research tasks.

1. Build a corpus of biographical episodes across cultures, historical periods, and social roles.
2. Develop a codebook that does not use astrological labels during initial discovery.
3. Compare expert qualitative coding with unsupervised or weakly supervised dimensional reduction.
4. Test cross-cultural invariance and translation stability.
5. Penalize bases that achieve coverage only through semantic vagueness.
6. Test whether a basis learned on one corpus can classify a held-out corpus.

Success condition. A relatively compact basis captures recurrent structure with high independent-coder agreement and meaningful out-of-sample stability.

Failure condition. The basis works only by retrospective stretching, proliferates dimensions until it merely restates the original events, or collapses under cross-cultural transfer.

§2.3 Providence, harmful intersections, and the problem of evil

Question. What does it mean for providence to honor a person’s antecedent contribution when another agent or natural process produces an unselected harm?

Research tasks.

1. Distinguish authored structure from tolerated risk and from entirely unselected event.
2. Model relational constraints where satisfaction for one person changes the possibility-space of another.
3. Determine whether the theory needs a principle of least harmful compossible realization.
4. Test whether such a principle recreates a traditional theodicy problem rather than solving it.
5. Identify cases in which a parameter can be honored through multiple worlds with radically different harm profiles.
6. State which moral exclusions the integrator is not permitted to override for aggregate benefit.

Success condition. A non-victim-blaming account of global integration that can explain what counts as honoring a chooser despite unselected harms.

Failure condition. The model can preserve compossibility only by treating every suffered event as secretly requested or by making providential choice morally arbitrary.

§2.4 Independence of the parameter basis from the celestial test

Question. Can the same archetypal/event-class basis be defined independently of astrological rules?

Why it matters. If event classes are defined by the astrology they are later used to confirm, the test is circular.

Research tasks.

1. Freeze the event-class codebook before celestial predictions are generated.
2. Use independent coders blind to astronomical data.
3. Compare multiple plausible parameter bases rather than selecting the one that maximizes astrological fit.
4. Pre-specify model selection and multiple-comparison correction.

Success condition. A parameter basis has independent value and reliability before it is used to test phase-semantics.

§3. Physics and Global Historical Determinacy

§3.1 Global determinacy without pretending quantum physics has settled metaphysics

Question. Which interpretations or formulations of contemporary physics are compatible with one complete actual history while preserving the empirical success of probabilistic laws?

Research tasks.

1. Distinguish block-universe ontology, determinism, stochastic law, superdeterminism, many-worlds branching, and merely retrospective uniqueness of actuality.
2. Determine the minimum physical claim required by the metaphysical model.
3. Avoid using quantum language as decorative support for astrology or providence.
4. Identify interpretations under which “one actual history” is straightforward, difficult, or incoherent.

Success condition. The execution layer can be stated without claiming more than physics supports.

Failure condition. The model requires a microphysical thesis contradicted by well-established evidence rather than merely underdetermined by it.

§3.2 Thermodynamic spine under alternative cosmological futures

Question. How much of the engine metaphor survives if late-time cosmology differs from a simple eternal-expansion heat-death scenario?

Research tasks.

1. Separate the Second Law, local nonequilibrium, and free-energy degradation from specific far-future scenarios.
2. Track DESI and other dark-energy results as they update the long-run outlook.
3. Test the language “runs out of exploitable differences” against cosmological cases where gravitational structure or changing dark energy complicates naive equilibration.
4. Keep total-energy language compatible with general-relativistic cosmology.

Success condition. The thermodynamic execution concept remains valid across a broad family of cosmological futures even if the exact terminal state changes.

Failure condition. The theory’s physical spine secretly depends on one obsolete cosmological forecast rather than on robust nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

§4. Celestial/Archetypal Extension

§4.1 Translate historical astrology into fixed prospective rules

Question. Can historically defensible astrological grammar be formalized tightly enough to make prospective phase claims before events occur?

Research tasks.

1. Select a bounded historical corpus and freeze interpretive rules before outcome data are examined.
2. Separate natal-reference rules, transit/timing rules, universal conditions, and regional modifiers.
3. Document every discretionary judgment point.
4. Produce machine-readable or coder-readable phase predictions with confidence levels.

Success condition. Independent practitioners using the frozen grammar produce substantially similar phase descriptions.

Failure condition. The grammar cannot be made operational without unconstrained discretionary interpretation.

§4.2 Blinded prospective test of phase-semantics

Question. Do pre-specified celestial phase descriptions correspond to independently coded archetypal life-event classes above appropriate null models?

Minimum design.

1. Pre-register celestial rules and event-class codebook.
2. Record predictions before outcome windows.
3. Blind event coders to celestial information.
4. Include base-rate, permutation, and generic-language nulls.
5. Correct for multiple comparisons.
6. Report null and negative results without reinterpretive rescue.

Success condition. Replicable out-of-sample association survives null models and independent replication.

Failure condition. Results collapse under blinding, pre-registration, held-out testing, or correction for flexible interpretation.

§4.3 Incremental value of natal reference information

Question. Does individual natal-reference information add predictive information beyond generic collective transits or broad temporal cycles?

Research tasks.

1. Compare models using only global celestial phase with models adding natal reference states.
2. Test whether houses/location information adds stable signal or merely increases flexibility.
3. Compare against non-astrological temporal controls such as season, age, calendar effects, and socioeconomic cycles.

Success condition. Natal information improves out-of-sample classification beyond simpler baselines.

§4.4 Historical case studies stay secondary

The Magi, 3 April 33 CE lunar eclipse, Babylonian omen corpora, Ptolemy, and Plotinus belong primarily to the References. They may motivate or constrain a test grammar but cannot substitute for the prospective test. Historical sophistication is not empirical validation.

§5. Comparative Theology and Historical Controls

§5.1 Christian anthropology

Question. Can the strong antecedent-agency model be stated in a recognizably Christian framework without falsely presenting premortal human agency as standard doctrine?

Research tasks.

1. Compare Catholic/Thomistic, Eastern Christian, Protestant, and Christian-Platonic accounts of soul and personhood.
2. Identify whether any tradition supplies resources for premortal created agency without reincarnation.
3. Keep the label Christian-theistic speculative reconstruction with Platonic/premortal commitments unless a stronger bridge is demonstrated.
4. Examine implications for grace, judgment, resurrection, and original sin.

Success condition. The theory can state precisely which Christian commitments it preserves, reconstructs, and rejects.

§5.2 Origen as bridge and critic

Question. What can safely be attributed to Origen concerning pre-existence, freedom, embodiment, and celestial signs?

Method. Give primary surviving texts priority, then compare current specialist scholarship and transmission history. Preserve uncertainty rather than using Origen as a proof-text.

Success condition. The project can use Origen without attributing its completed architecture to him.

§5.3 Alast and responsibility without memory

Question. How have major Islamic exegetical traditions understood Qur’an 7:172, and what philosophical models of responsibility without autobiographical memory can legitimately be drawn from them?

Boundary. Do not transform primordial testimony into biography-selection without textual evidence.

§5.4 Divine individuation and naming

Question. How far can biblical “called by name,” prenatal vocation, and naming motifs support identity-to-God prior to autobiographical self-knowledge?

Research tasks.

1. Study Isaiah 43:1, 45:4, 49:1; Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139:16; John 10:3; Luke 1:13 and 1:31; Revelation 2:17 in context.
2. Distinguish corporate calling, prenatal vocation, divine naming, ordinary parental naming, and eschatological renaming.
3. Test whether “divine individuation” remains a useful category without implying premortal self-naming.

Success condition. A precise structural analogy that strengthens identity language without overclaiming the texts.

§5.5 Buddhism as adversarial comparison

Question. Can Buddhist causal continuity illuminate responsibility across discontinuity while remaining genuinely incompatible with the strong substantial-identity version?

Purpose. Buddhism should remain an adversarial comparator, not be harmonized by force. Its cyclic cosmology and not-self anthropology pull in different directions relative to the project.

§6. Release Criteria and Project Discipline

§6.1 Article freeze rule

The article is revised only if one of these occurs:

• the identity criterion changes;
• a horn of the antecedence trilemma is selected or eliminated;
• the definition of authorial parameterization changes;
• the account of originating agency changes materially;
• the architecture of providential integration changes;
• the physical execution commitment changes materially;
• the celestial extension changes status from optional hypothesis to supported, failed, or differently formulated;
• the relation between physical horizon and eschatology changes.

New quotations, source refinements, dates, historical parallels, and caveats go to the References unless they change one of those commitments.

§6.2 References update rule

The References should be updated whenever:

• a better primary source is located;
• a historical attribution is corrected;
• a contemporary scientific result changes a date-sensitive claim;
• an objection becomes stronger or weaker;
• a source’s status changes from witness to analogy, or vice versa;
• a new cross-link helps prevent conceptual conflation.

Every entry retains Article load-bearing? Yes/No.

§6.3 Research-program update rule

This document changes when:

• an open question is resolved or split;
• a proposed method fails;
• a test is preregistered or completed;
• a failure condition is triggered;
• a new workstream becomes necessary.

§6.4 Evidence discipline

The project should keep four negative rules permanently visible:

1. No source-harvesting: similarity never becomes identity by accumulation.
2. No physics laundering: scientific vocabulary does not validate a metaphysical claim merely by association.
3. No interpretive escape hatch: empirical failure cannot be rescued by unlimited retrospective semantics.
4. No victim-blaming inference: presence of a harm in a realized biography does not imply personal antecedent selection of that harm.

Current Priority Order

The next research effort should not add more traditions. It should proceed in this order:

1. Identity (§1.1). Without it, “you chose” has no stable subject.
2. Antecedence (§1.2). Until a horn is chosen, the location of agency stays undefined.
3. Authorship (§1.3-§1.5). Without it, the limited menu is either empty or scene-level, compatibilism may make antecedent agency redundant, or sourcehood may regress into prior character or luck.
4. Integration semantics (§2.1-2.3). Without it, providence remains a named function rather than a theory of many wills.
5. Parameter basis (§2.2-2.4). Archetypal selection stays poetic until a basis exists.
6. Only then, celestial testing (§4). Otherwise astrology will be tested against classes designed after the fact.

That order is deliberately hostile to the most seductive part of the theory. Testing the sky-clock semantics comes after the ontology and event vocabulary are constrained tightly enough for the test to be able to fail.
